Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
