"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're not alone. A host of famous admirers have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the band will forever be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
