Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
