Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would withdraw from public roles after House committee made public his repeated correspondence with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their development".

Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the governing body," the company stated.

Congressional Action

This development comes after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on this week to pass a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently head to the office of President Trump for signature. The President has stated he expects to endorse the measure, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-connected emails released by the Congressional committee last week referenced multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages indicated that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were shared with the public, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor held senior posts under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When stating his departure from public roles earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be associated with the group.

He became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive the company leader.
