Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins After Recent Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six opening half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a decisive 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after player Terry Rozier was arrested over alleged illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
