Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
