Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the team's ten-game winless beginning to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they begin the search of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice given he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
