Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Squad

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted several past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and excel out here.”
