Slot Insists He Feels Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's expected for doubts to be asked about his future following another convincing defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, marking the team's worst run after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I've received significant backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It's important to change things and get a victory naturally but when you're coaching a team and underperforming then it's expected that people question you.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Club Management
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “During our regular conversations we have I sense the trust. But I've not talked to them after this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Failings and Player Reaction
The manager highlighted known shortcomings from his squad in their European defeat, namely wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his view of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry inside. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a phase like this with results this poor.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our shirts. And as long as it is gone, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and the reason it's called the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
