The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
