The Contents of that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a dark entity, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
