The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent acronym emerged a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to treat a minor who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are still being committed. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
