Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory demands contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
Tuchel seeks his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is about harnessing it in the right way. Personal talent matters but England have learned the hard way that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach mention loving the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude possesses the edge. It takes a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and create an environment where he can channel this edge in matches and for the objectives we are building as a team.”
The star dominated the spotlight at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in a friendly win against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
